Arts, Crafts & Motherhood

This week's theme was so much fun! At the end of each week I let Ellie pick what she wants to study the following week. She chose to study dinosaurs and I was thrilled because there are just so many things you can do! Read on to see what dinosaur activities we did this week!

MONDAY

We started off this week by activating our prior knowledge about dinosaurs. I cut out a dinosaur with my Cricut Explore Air 2 and created a KWL chart (K-what I know, W-what I want to know, L-what I learned). Ellie and I had a discussion about what she knew or what she thought she knew about dinosaurs. I explained that sometimes we think we know something, but then find out we were wrong...and that's ok!

After that, Ellie decorated the cover page of her dinosaur journal. Every week the girls have a journal where they glue all their work in. I staple three large pieces of construction paper together and that seems to be a perfect amount of page. It's nice to have in all in one place and it's fun to go back and see what we did!

Shortly after Ellie finished her cover, she scurried away to her room and emerged with one of her dinosaur books. She was excited and ready to dive right in. We just browsed through the book and wrote wrote some notes down on sticky notes...things that were interesting, things that we learned, etc.

After a trip to Goodwill, lunch, and playing outside, we got back to work! I created a hand writing worksheet with the word "dinosaur". Each day this week she had to trace the word and then write it herself. This simple activity was two fold: one, she was working on her hand writing (obviously), second, she was writing and seeing the "dinosaur" many times. I was hoping that this would help her to remember the word and be able to read it and identify it. The she traces and practices her handwriting, I usually let her choose whatever writing instrument she wants. It makes her feel like she has control and it makes it more fun!

After that, we worked on graphing dinosaurs. We used this worksheet. Ellie assigned each icon a color in the graph. Then she colored the corresponding pictures the same color. She then colored in the correct number of boxes in the graph by each icon. Lastly, we analyzed the graph. I asked her questions like,

-Which dinosaur did you see the most? How do you know?

-Which dinosaur did you see the leas? How do you know?

Lastly, Ellie played a dinosaur game on the iPad.

TUESDAY

Tuesday was a little a lighter day, school wise. Our big learning activity today was a dinosaur dig. I gathered up our supplies: toy dinosaurs, paint brushes, string, shovels, and a large tub. We headed out to a local park that has a great sand pit. The girls helped me fill the tub with sand and helped me bury the toy dinosaurs. I then created a grid over the tub with sting and explained to Ellie that she was going to be a paleontologist today and was going to dig for dinosaurs. We discuss why paleontologists uses girds when digging for bones. It helps them keep track of their findings. The girls had a blast carefully digging out the dinosaurs and brushing them off with their paintbrushes.

This is a great pack of little dinosaur figurines. You get 12 little dinosaurs for $8.99!

Before dinner we sat down to complete a quick writing activity. I found some dinosaur stickers at Dollar Tree. Ellie chose four stickers and we completed the sentence "This Dinosaur has____" for each sticker. We talked about what a sentence is, how it starts with a capital letter, and how it ends with a period. It took a little bit of bribing and help, but we got through it.

WEDNESDAY

It was a beautiful day so we took a trip to the Milwaukee County Zoo to see them dinosaur exhibit! The exhibit was awesome! The dinosaur replicas were amazing and interesting. Layla totally loved them! Ellie, however, didn't really dig it too much. Poor Ellie got overwhelmed by their sizes and all the noises they were making. We got through it and had a great time at the zoo!

When we got home we were surprised to see our order of dinosaur skeletons from Amazon arrived! You guys, these are SO SO COOL! For under $5, you get 12 dinosaur skeleton figurines!

THURSDAY

On Thursday we worked on some sight words. Ellie has a list of about 22 sight words she knows/almost knows. There were a few that she kept getting stuck on so I created a worksheet for her to complete. She had to color the words, stamp the words, and write the word. Since it was dinosaur week I slapped a few dinosaur stickers on!

Meanwhile, Layla worked on a booklet I printed from online. You can find it here. We read each page, counted the dinosaurs and identified the color it should be.

After all that hard work, we went outside to be paleontologists again! I found these little excavation kits at the Dollar Tree. They had gems inside and not dinosaurs, but I explained to Ellie that scientists have to work carefully at getting whatever it is out, otherwise you risk breaking it. The girls had a blast using their tools to get the gem (or pretend dinosaur) out.

After breaking apart our excavation kit, we realized that the material acted like chalk! I wrote some of Ellie's sight words on the driveway and we read them! Then I created a little jumping activity with her words as well. Layla worked on her letter recognition.

FRIDAY

Dad was off on Friday, so I created some sub plans for him to do with the girls while I was out. Ellie constructed some paper dinosaurs and glued them into her journal while Layla worked on writing letters and numbers on a white board.

After lunch, the girls and dad went for a hike and they had an absolute BLAST. They say tons of wildlife, saw some small waterfalls, and played as they hiked. They even brought their little dinosaur skeletons. (Dad's way of incorporating dinosaurs into the hike. I think it was a great idea!)

Later, while dad cooked dinner, Layla and I played a shape and color memory game. That sweet girl had so much fun having learning time with mommy. She was begging for more, so we also worked on a worksheet from a workbook I got at Dollar Tree.

SATURDAY

We took a trip to our public library to check out their book sale. Oh...my...gosh! I let each girl fill an entire bag with books to take home. (It was $5 per bag of books! You can't go wrong with that!) Ellie was in heaven. She found all sorts of exciting books, including a few by Eric Carle. She is able to recognize his work now, and she is very excited and proud of it! When we got home we dumped them out and I gave them cleaning wipes to wipe them down. Then they organized their books and read and read and read.

SUNDAY

Here's the thing. I didn't plan on doing any school work today, but when the opportunity presents itself and the kids want to, I DO IT! Ellie read some of her sight words with her new pointer (Dollar Tree again!).

Then she completed a dinosaur matching activity that she glued in her book. You can find this activity here. After she was done, we went back and looked at all the work she did this week.

Meanwhile, Layla was working on writing her numbers and letters on her whiteboard.

In between all these activities everyday there also is reading...lots and lots of reading. The best thing is is that it's usually kid initiated. I'm so lucky to have kids that love books!

Well, that about wraps up our busy dinosaur week! We had a great time with this theme and learned a lot! Next week is going to be.......OCEAN ANIMALS!

I hope you found some activities that you can do with your kiddos and don't forget to stop by again next week to see our new activities!

I decided to switch up my approach for our second week of homeschooling. I felt like a weekly theme would be a more manageable way for me to plan the week's activities. What I decided to do was pick a theme, this week was apples, and then I just complied a list of activities that would do during the week. Each day I would pick a few activities! I did try to make sure I had a mixture of art, math, reading, and writing activities so that we would hit multiple subject areas.

Here is what we did this week!

Monday

We started off our apple week by activating our prior knowledge about apples and made a poster! I asked the girls, "What do you know about apples"? Here is what they came up with! After the poster was completed, I hung it on our homeschool wall and the girls did some apple coloring.

The girls ended up spending the afternoon at my parents house and my mom made an apple pie with Ellie! What a great and delicious lesson. My parents are super supportive and excited about homeschooling this year and they are eager to incorporate what we are learning when the girls are at their house.

Tuesday

On Tuesday, we started off by coloring our cover page for our apple journal. I thought it would be fun to create a journal where the kids could glue their work into. I just took a few very large pages of construction paper to create this book. Then I googled "apple coloring page", put that image into Canva and added their name. They colored it and glued it to the front. After that, Ellie and I worked on labeling the parts of an apple and glued that worksheet into her journal. You can get an apple labeling printable here. While we did that, Layla colored apples pages. I always ask Layla, who's 3, if she wants to the activity with us. If she says yes, great. If she doesn't, then I try to a simple activity for her to do (usually coloring) or she just plays on her own.

(click the arrows on the pictures to slide through them.)

After that, we just had to get a real apple just had to cut it open to look at its parts! The girls really enjoyed picking the seeds out of the core and eating the flesh! While we were doing this I kept asking Ellie what part was what...repetition repetition repetition!

We then decided to take a break and do a Costco run! After we came back the girls relaxed with a movie. I found this informative and entertaining video on Youtube about how apples go from the orchard to the factory and then to the grocery store. (Now Ellie is hooked on Blippli! )

The last activity for the day was an apple math game. I purchased an apple mini unit for a couple dollars from Teachers Pay Teachers. In this packet was a math game. To play, Ellie had to roll two dice (in our case we have a dice inside a dice). She had to add up the numbers and find the number on the game board. I gave her the choice of crossing it off with a whiteboard marker (since I put it in a protective sleeve) or using game chips.

Ok, I lied...that wasn't our last activity! We did a little apple tasting! I created an apple rating chart that Ellie glued into her journal. Every time we try a different apple, she colors it to match the apple and then she rates it. We also write down words that describe it. You can download the apple rating chart below.

Wednesday

True transparency.... we did not get a lot of school stuff done on Wednesday. We had a rough day filled with fighting and arguing kids and a frustrated crabby mom! We made multiple attempts to reset our moods, but not much seemed to work. We did get some apple tasting in and also made some apple sun catchers. I used contact paper and tissue paper from the Dollar Tree.

Thursday

Thursday was a brand new day and it went much smoother. Ellie and I started off the school day talking about apple vocabulary and she practiced writing a few words. Then we made an Apple Life Cycle booklet. We talked about how an apple tree grows and Ellie labeled each part of the cycle. I got this from the Apple mini bundle I mentioned above.

Next came the mother of all activities! My girls, partularly Layla (3), LOVED LOVED LOVED this easy activity. We went on an apple number hunt! I created a document with nine apples and each apple had a number (1-9). Then I created another document with larger apples and each apple had dots. I printed the large apples on cardstock and colored each one a different color (didn't want to use all the colored printer ink!). I cut them out and laminated them with laminating pouches and my iron.

I LOVE these so so so much! Here is my referral link!

Then, I taped the large apples with the dots around the house and my girls had to take their clipboard with their answer sheet and match the numbers. If they came to the apple with two dots, they had to find the number two (in written form) and color it according to the color they found. OMG! They LOVED this, especially my three year old. You can download them below for FREE!

Looking back, apparently Thursday was fun filled and busy day! We incorporated some art into our week with apple painting! I love to get rolls of brown craft paper for all sorts of things at our house. I get them at Dollar Tree and they are great for painting on, protecting tables, and wrapping boxes! I got a few colors of paint out and cut a few apples in half, stuck a fork in each one and the girls created apple trees!

Friday

We didn't do a whole lot of apple stuff Friday. Ellie started the day with some self directed writing in her little journal. I made a word wall of all the high frequency words she knows so far and she decided to use those words to make sentences. At this point they are not sentences yet, but she is starting to learn how to put words together to make meaning.

We also took our weekly trip the library on Friday. We found a few apple books and decided on next week's theme: DINOSAURS!

Sunday

To wrap up our apple week, we took a trip to a local apple orchard! We checked out the apple trees, had some apple cider donuts, and apple cider! Oh......and pumpkins!!

So I saw an interchangeable sign on Walmart's website and knew I could create it myself! I knew I HAD to! I am so excited to make seasonal wreaths for this adorable sign! I created this wall decor on my Facebook page!

Materials I Used:

- 3 packs of large gallon paint sticks (9 total sticks)

-magnetic hook from Dollar Tree

-wreath form from Dollar Tree

-greenery

-white pumpkins and berries from Dollar Tree

-Tumbling Tower blocks from Dollar Tree

-brown stain (for the frame)

-white paint (for the paint sticks)

-black paint (for the magnetic hook)

-hot glue gun and glue sticks (LOVE Gorilla Glue sticks) Affiliate link below.

I'm not going to walk you through each and very step, as I did not take pictures along with way while making it. I did, however, create this on a LIVE video on Facebook. Check it out here.

I will give you the basic rundown of how I created this! I will also give you the "welcome to our home" as a FREE PDF printable down below.

First, I glued 9 large paint sticks together to get my background. Again, check out my live video to see how I did that. Next, I printed the words I wanted, colored the back with a pencil, and then traced over the words on my board. Check it out on my video! I then painted my words on the board with black paint.

Then, I painted my hook magnet from Dollar Tree. While that was drying I created my fall wreath with boxwood greenery and white pumpkins and berries from Dollar Tree.

Lastly, I created a frame using the Tumbling Tower blocks from Dollar Tree. I had those little starts sitting around from another project and put them on each corner because I had a hard time with the blocks fitting all the way to the edge.

I just LOVE how it turned out!

DOWNLOAD IT HERE!

You can download the "welcome to our home" sign down below. Just print it out the size you'd like on regular copy paper! Then follow my directions in the live video to transfer it to your wood project! You will find this technique around minute 33 of my video.

I hope this post inspires you to create something beautiful!

If you're looking for more inspiration and ideas, head on over to my Facebook page! I have lots of live videos, crafting videos, and other posts you may like!
